I recently dived into a project that I’ve been wanting to do for a while – remaking the Yves Saint Laurent YSL LE CARRé SATCHEL BAG. This bag has always caught my eye with its classic design, and I was excited to try and recreate it with my own twist.
First things first, I gathered all my materials. I needed some good quality leather, a sturdy lining fabric, and of course, all the hardware like buckles and clasps. I spent a good chunk of time just looking for the perfect shade of leather that matched the original YSL bag. It was tougher than I thought! I went from store to store, comparing swatches and feeling the texture to make sure it was just right.
Once I had everything, I started by carefully studying the original bag’s construction. I took loads of photos and even sketched out some diagrams to understand how each piece fit together. It was like solving a puzzle, figuring out the order of operations.
Cutting the leather was a bit nerve-wracking. I double-checked my measurements like a hundred times before making each cut. Mess up here, and you’re wasting precious material! I used a rotary cutter and a metal ruler to get those clean, straight lines. Precision is key, folks!
Then came the sewing. Oh boy, the sewing! I dusted off my old sewing machine and got to work. Stitching leather can be tricky; you need a heavy-duty needle and the right thread tension. There were a few moments where I had to rip out seams and start over, but hey, that’s part of the process, right?
- Assembling the bag was like putting together a 3D puzzle. I pinned and glued pieces together, slowly but surely, watching the bag take shape.
- Adding the lining was a challenge, but it gave the bag such a polished look. I carefully hand-stitched it in some areas to make sure it was secure and looked neat.
- The final step was attaching all the hardware. I used rivets and a setting tool to secure the buckles and clasps. This part was actually pretty satisfying, seeing all the shiny details come together.
After hours of work, I finally finished my YSL LE CARRé SATCHEL BAG remake! It wasn’t an exact replica, but I was pretty darn proud of how it turned out. It felt amazing to hold something I had created from scratch, something inspired by such an iconic design.
This project taught me a lot about leatherworking, patience, and the importance of paying attention to detail. If you ever feel like it, I recommend you to try it too!
