So, I’ve been wanting to get my hands on a decent replica of the OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch for a while now. You know, the one with the open case back so you can see all the intricate workings inside. I just love that look.
I started by digging around online, trying to find information about the best replicas out there. It’s a bit of a minefield, to be honest. Lots of shady websites and questionable sellers. I did come across some interesting bits, though. I learned that OMEGA made a vintage Speedmaster replica, the ST 345.0222, back in 1998. That got me thinking, maybe there are some good quality replicas based on that model floating around.
Then I stumbled upon some discussions about the Speedmaster Professional reference 145.012-67, which apparently came out in 1967. It’s different from the Moonwatch, but still a cool piece. I even found a place in Karlsruhe, Germany, called Haid-und-Neu-Str. 18, that might have something to do with Omega Speedmasters. Not sure, but I made a note of it.
I also read that Omega stopped making the “First Omega in Space” watch about four years ago. That’s a bummer, but it doesn’t really affect my search for a Moonwatch replica.
There was also a mention of a vintage Seamaster replica from 1982. Elegant stuff, but not what I’m after at the moment. Then, things got a bit wild. I saw some website selling all kinds of replicas, like Rolex Day-Dates and Tag Heuer Monacos. Prices were all over the place, from around €173 to over €800. Crazy, right?
The search wasn’t all smooth sailing. I found a forum post where someone was complaining about their replica running fast, even after multiple services. They tried using the micro-adjusting screw, but it didn’t solve the problem. Reminded me to be careful about the movement quality.
Finally, I found some custom jewelry manufacturers in Australia. Apparently, they do design, manufacturing, and work with fabricated metals. I figured they might be able to create a custom case back for a replica. It’s a long shot, but hey, I’m exploring all options.
My to-do list currently looks like this:
- Keep researching reputable replica sellers.
- Look into the possibility of getting a custom open case back made.
- Find out more about that place in Karlsruhe.
- Maybe learn a bit more about watch movements, just in case.
It’s been a journey, and I’m still far from getting my hands on that perfect replica, but I’m not giving up. The hunt continues!
