Okay, so, I gotta tell you about this little project I got into recently. It all started when I stumbled upon this fancy watch, the Patek Philippe Calatrava 6119R-001. Man, that thing is shiny and pretty, the cream of the crop, you know? I thought, “Why not try to make one myself?” Not the real deal, of course, but a remake.
First, I did some digging around about this Calatrava. Apparently, it’s a classic, been around for ages, and there are tons of different versions. People go crazy for the old ones, they are super collectible. The real ones? They go for, like, $11,000 to $84,000 bucks! Can you believe that? Average is around $24,000, which is still a lot. For all Patek Philippe watches, it is around $50,000. But this one, the 6119R-001, it’s listed for like $30,955 somewhere.
I figured my remake would be way cheaper. So, I started gathering what I needed. This watch, it’s got a round case, all polished up, 39mm across and about 8.08mm thick. It’s made of 18k rose gold, which is fancy, on a strap with a gold buckle, too. Oh, and it’s water-resistant up to 30 meters, not that I’d take it swimming.
Breaking Down the Process
- Finding the Materials: I looked for materials that looked like rose gold but didn’t cost a fortune. I found some good alternatives that had that shiny look. The strap was easier, I just picked up a nice leather one that matched the pictures I saw online.
- Working on the Case: This was tricky. I used a mold to get that round shape, and then I spent hours polishing it to make it look all shiny and new. It’s not perfect, but it’s got that classic Calatrava vibe.
- The Movement: Now, the real one has this manual wind caliber 30-255 PS movement. I didn’t even try to replicate that. I just got a simple, reliable movement that would keep time. No one’s gonna see the inside anyway, right?
- Putting It All Together: This was the fun part. I carefully assembled all the pieces, the case, the dial, the hands, and the movement. Then I attached the strap, and bam! It looked like a watch.
It took a while, and it’s definitely not a perfect copy. But, it looks pretty darn good for a remake! And you know what? I learned a lot about watches and how they’re made. I wore it around, and people actually noticed it. They thought it was a real fancy watch! I just smiled and said, “Yeah, it’s something.” It’s a good conversation starter, that’s for sure.
