Okay, so I’ve been wanting to get my hands on a really nice watch for a while now. I’ve always been a fan of the Patek Philippe Calatrava, especially that 5088/100P model. You know, the one with the black dial and all that fancy engraving? But man, that price tag! Over a hundred grand? No way I could swing that. So, I started thinking, why not try to make one myself? A little DIY project, you know?
First thing I did was to look up everything I could about the watch online. Pictures, specs, you name it. I needed to figure out exactly what made this thing tick, literally. I found out it usually sells for around $83, which is still way too much!
Then came the fun part – hunting down the parts. I spent hours online, looking for watch movements, cases, dials, hands – everything I needed. It was tough, let me tell you. Finding stuff that looked like the real deal, but didn’t cost a fortune, was a real challenge. Some parts were easier to find, but others, like the engraved case, were a real pain.
Once I had all the parts, it was time to put this bad boy together. This is where things got really tricky. I watched a bunch of videos online about watch assembly. I didn’t have all the fancy tools the pros use, so I had to get creative. Lots of trial and error, let me tell you. I messed up a few times, bent a few hands, scratched a few dials. It was frustrating, but I kept at it.
Finally, after what felt like forever, I managed to get the movement into the case, the dial on, the hands attached. It wasn’t perfect, but it looked pretty darn close to the real thing. At least, I thought so.
- Sourcing the movement: This was the heart of the watch, and finding a good one was tough.
- Finding a similar dial: The black dial with the specific pattern was hard to find, but I eventually found something that looked pretty close.
- The hands: Getting the right shape and size was a pain, and I ended up bending a few before I got it right.
- The case: The original 5088/100P has a beautifully engraved case. I couldn’t find anything like it, so I went with a plain one that still looked pretty good.
I wore it around for a few days, showing it off to my friends. They were impressed! They couldn’t believe I made it myself. Of course, it’s not a real Patek Philippe. It doesn’t have the same level of craftsmanship or the same value. But it’s mine, and I built it with my own two hands. And that’s pretty cool, if you ask me.
The End Result
It’s not perfect, but it’s a pretty good imitation of a Patek Philippe Calatrava 5088/100P. And the best part? It cost me way less than $83, let alone a hundred grand! It was a fun project, and I learned a lot about watches in the process. Would I do it again? Maybe. It was a lot of work, but the satisfaction of building something like this yourself is pretty awesome.
